December 2023 Fishing Report

Key West Fishing Report December 2023

Hello everyone! I know it’s been a while since I posted a fishing report. After so many years writing for magazines and blogs, I had to take a little break! I know a lot of you were big fans of the reports, and I will try my best to create more content on a regular basis again. Anyways, I hope everyone has had a great holiday season so far and a happy new year coming up!

This December we have experienced a lot of different weather patterns, which means we have been fishing in a lot of different areas. A typical winter time phenomenon! We have also been using a lot of different techniques considering fishing in a lot of a different areas. In addition to all of this, we get a lot of different people out on the water with a lot of different skill levels and goals for their day.

Lately, I have been fishing hard bottom and structure with live or cut bait. This tends to get us some good action for any skill level. It also is fairly promising for getting some edible fish! What’s nice about these areas is you can be interacting with the cut bait game, while someone who prefers casting can jig off to the side. The jig sometimes out fishes the bait! In this scenario we are getting mangrove (gray) snapper, lane snapper, yellowtail snapper, mutton snapper, red grouper, jack crevalle, yellowjacks, mackerel, and more! A very nice variety if you ask me.

On some of the less windy days these ares can be a lot of fun to drift over with lures, depending on the anglers skill level. It can be a blast for guys who are used to throwing lures for bass or other species in freshwater. On the windier days with lures, we are drifting grass basins with just about all the species listed above plus sea trout and some other winter time species mixed in. It’s surprising to catch so much on days where you wouldn’t think it would be worth being on the water.

With the multiple styles of fishing we have in Key West, you can for sure finish the day off trying to chum in a shark! A lot of the species we encounter throughout the morning are actually good bait for sharks. This can be a nice relaxing part of your charter while you wait…until all hell breaks loose and you have to reel it in!

With popularity growing in the sandbar charter world, just remember, I can do that too. A lot of sandbar charters offer fishing in their trips, but they typically aren’t outfitted with the gear needed or knowledge of the fishery. We can go on a fishing charter and finish the day up at the sandbar any time of the year! All you have do is ask.

Don’t wait too long to book your trip this holiday season, as things are filling up quick from now til past the New Year! You can book direct online on my BOOKINGS PAGE.
