March 2019 Key West Fishing Report

3/7/19

Fishing in Key West has been great lately! We have experienced warm weather for quite some time now; so long that I can’t even remember when we had our last cold front. We did just get one the other day though, which cooled things down a little bit. This has not stopped our fishing luck though, as the cold front was fairly mild and didn’t cool our water temperatures down much.

Tarpon are starting to show up in the backcountry as they have for the past few weeks. They are thriving in our warm water temperatures and slamming all the bait that we have around. Most of these fish are in small schools, but have a wide range of shapes and sizes. What is nice about this time of year is that we are fishing channels for tarpon that still have loads of winter time species in them. This means when we are live baiting in channels, you could hook more than just a tarpon if they are around. We have been catching jack crevalle, yellow jacks, and cobia while waiting for that tarpon bite. How could you beat that?

As far as the other areas in the backcountry go, we have been catching our usual winter time variety in grass basins and up near islands. Trout, snapper, ladyfish, barracuda, sharks, pompano, jacks, and sometimes even a redfish here and there. The flats have had some permit and bonefish on them if the water temperatures and wind conditions allow us to sight fish. Permit are getting ready to head out to the reef to spawn for a couple months so we are seeing some of them bunched up in channels ready to head out.
